LISTENING TO OUR BODIES I often wonder what the world would be like if we all listened to our bodies more? Would women push through to work every month when they are on their moons(menstrual cycles)? Would men push through after getting hurt when working to only re-injure themselves again? Would we go to a party, and drink and eat even though we know it hurts our bodies because we do not want to seem unsocial? I have to admit I am not one to always listen to my body. I push through and work when I know I am not supposed to because of a strong Protestant work ethic my parents gave me. So how do we as a collective listen to our bodies within the social constructs that we live in? I went to a new moon ecstatic dance recently. It was amazing. The leader set the intention that we focus on what we want to blossom or bloom in our life. Like always I think I pick something easy, but that is never the case. I pick self-love.....and then the dance began… I start to pick myself apart, and I remind myself that thankfully no one is watching me dance....this is just for me. As I dance I see the energy flowing through me. Greens and Blues swirl around me as I move my hips, let my arms flow, and turn and twist with no idea where I will end up. As I listen to my body it tells me so many things....I’m holding onto an old lover....I let him go. I am afraid of so many emotions that I want to stuff them down....but I am letting my body lead....the tears fall. After, I feel better…refreshed. I actually sleep a lot that weekend. A healer told me that I needed to rest, and not push myself....but I felt guilty. There are dishes to do, insurance companies to call, and laundry to put away. Amazingly because of getting in touch with my body through dance, I just listen to my body, and when it is time to do things I do it....and then I sleep. Later, I do a little more, and I sleep again. TOOLS TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY There are so many things that these earth bodies have to offer us. When we listen, we know what foods are not good for it, and what foods it is craving. We know when to sleep. We listen and know what activity is good for it...is it yoga, walking, biking, or dancing...what does your body want? Oh, and then there are the emotions....when we are listening to the body it has expressions that it needs to release. I am having back pain...and as I listen deeper I realize I am having great fear at this new adventure that I am about to embark on. Just listening to pain in the body can give you so much information, and not always emotional! Then we have people in our lives that our bodies are drawn to for lesson that we need to learn. There are people that our bodies do not want to be around. It could guide you to many different types of change. A new place to live, a new friend, a new way of eating food. THE CHALLENGE My question to all of you is, in what way are you not listening to your body? How can you integrate your body into a new way of doing things? Habits are not easy to get rid of, but there is great ease when we release them! Pick something that you want to change this spring, then begin really listening to what your body has to say about that habit. Let your body lead and watch it thrive!
